Amazon vs Netflix

Just a quick compare and contrast.

I’m a big fan of Amazon. I have an Amazon Cloud Music Player Account which has been a real help with freeing my hard drive of lots of music. I became a bigger fan when last week I received this email:


Thanks for your prior purchase of the 50 GB Amazon Cloud Drive storage plan.  Beginning today, all paid Cloud Drive storage plans include unlimited space for MP3 and AAC (.m4a) music files at no extra charge for a limited time. Learn more here: 

Because your current plan now includes unlimited space for music, we’re refunding the difference between the cost of your Cloud Drive plan of 50 GB and the cost of a current 20 GB plan ($20), which is the least-expensive Cloud Drive plan that includes unlimited space for music. A refund of $30 will be issued to the card originally used for your Amazon Cloud Drive storage plan. Refunds are typically completed within 10 business days and will appear as a credit on your credit card statement.

Not often when you get a note that tells you they are giving you a refund for something that I totally believe is worthwhile.

Then today I received this from NetFlix-

Dear Chris,

 We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each. Now our members have a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan, or both.

 Your current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:

 Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month

 Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $7.99 a month

 Your price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). You don’t need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

 These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.

 You can easily change or cancel your unlimited streaming plan, unlimited DVD plan, or both, by going to the Plan Change page in Your Account.

Netflix is a great service and I use the heck out of there streaming service. I (at least in theory) get the financial realities that Netflix is under there was just one thing missing. Was it just me or did this feel a bit cold and heartless… a little like drop us if you want…. Honey Badger don’t care.
